Brendan Reed bio for FE:CSR

I just published Brendan Reed’s character biography for Fire Emblem: The Complete Saga Rewritten, but for whatever reason, it says it was published back in May (2015). You can access it easily by going to the category “Character Bios and Stats”.

For the record, of the characters I introduced in “The Mission”, I have completed bios for Brendan, Pascal and Jan. I’m in the middle of writing the others (Laurel, Uhai, Jerme, Legault, and Aesha), but they are not a priority for me.

Oh, regarding FE:CSR: Tale 9x Chapter 3 is taking longer to complete than I anticipated. HOPEFULLY I’ll finish it before my deadline (Valentine’s Day).


The Bulwarks

A.K.A. Valm’s Shepherds.

I will be introducing this bunch in Tale 9x Chapter 4 of FE:CSR. For now, I’ll just give you a list of characters and limited descriptions.

Cramer (Lord character) – a disgraced Colonel from Celicium with a foul tongue. Has a rivalry with General Juidice. Disagrees with Valm’s militaristic approach at handling the Grimleal.

LeGrant (Oifey archetype) – a tactician and Cramer’s childhood friend. Docile in nature, but strong on the field.

Matthias and Marta (Cain and Abel archetype) – childhood friends from Rosanne. Sophisticated, yet somehow tolerant of Cramer’s rough personality. Borderline-obsessed with tea.

Edna (Ogma archetype) – the original leader of the Bulwarks. Stepped down when she realized Cramer would be a far better leader. Serves as a mother figure and adviser to the group.

Kor’el and Sin’li (Bord and Cord archetype) – brother and sister from Chon’sin. Both aggressive, but loyal to Cramer. Wildlife enthusiasts.

Jian’quei (Nabarl archetype) – a young Chon’sinian girl who was rescued from revenants by LeGrant. Naïve, but powerful. Has more energy than anyone else in the group.

Sila (Lena archetype) – a cleric from the Province of Valm. Blithe personality.

Nadir (Julian archetype) – a homeless thief born to a Plegian family. Indebted to Sila. Secretive, but trustworthy.

Xao’ren (Jeorge archetype) – Jian’quei’s distant cousin and half-sister of General Yen’fay. Quiet, but lethal with a blade and light magic.

Nathan (Merric archetype) – a young mage from the Province of Valm. Sila’s bodyguard. Kindhearted and intelligent, but brooding.

“Wild Bull” Jan (936 A.S. – 1 M.P.)

Jan was born into the Saraca Tribe in Sacae. His father was a blacksmith and his mother a diviner. At the time, the Saraca Tribe was rather isolated, and Jan wanted to see the world. With his parents’ blessings, he moved to the Bernese Dukedom of Dale when he was fifteen. The stipend he left with was enough to buy him a house and shop, where he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a great blacksmith.

In 955, Jan’s village was attacked by mountain bandits and he was forced to fight, as the guards were outnumbered and on the verge of being overwhelmed. He had practiced with weapons before in case of an emergency such as this, and found he was best with an axe. Being a Bernese blacksmith, he had become very strong and somewhat resilient, but had no experience with magic and therefore never developed a resistance to it. With his help, along with that of other villagers (who had all been supplied by Jan), the guards managed to drive the bandits away with relatively few casualties and no damage to any of the homes. Jan’s actions in both fighting the bandits and supplying the soldiers and villagers earned him respect and renown all throughout Bern. The following year, he was offered a very large sum to sell his business to a Count who thought he could easily profit from the armory, as every soldier in Dale shopped there, but Jan declined, stating he wanted to operate the shop his way. The Count, enraged, sent his personal army into the village to burn it down and drive the blacksmith into exile. Jan fled to the south, and he was pursued all the way to Kingsborough. The King’s men protected him and allowed him to live in peace with the funds he had earned (which they retrieved from the Count, who had stolen them). Jan was grateful to the soldiers, but began to loathe the nobility. That hatred only deepened as he heard of more and more corruption when the couriers delivered their weekly reports. Naturally, in 959, when Brendan Reed approached him about forming a small group of vigilantes that would target and eliminate corrupt noblemen, he was more than willing to accept.

And so, Jan became the first member of the Black Fang other than the Commander and his wife and became its resident blacksmith and supplier. Throughout the rest of the year, he used what connections he still had from the old days to find out who might have been willing to join. First, he was told about Lord Pascal, Palatine of Kingsborough, who had in secret been eliminating bandits on his spare time. The blacksmith consulted Brendan, who agreed to hunt for bandits in an attempt to rendezvous with the Palatine and convince him to join them. After a week of roaming, they eventually came across him. Pascal initially was reluctant about joining the group, but befriended the trio, stayed in touch and helped fund them. At the time, the group was far too small to even consider taking on noblemen and their armies, so they focused on ridding the lands of bandits. Eventually they came across a Sacaen warrior of the Djute tribe who, like Jan, had traveled to Bern to expand his knowledge of the world. Unlike Pascal, the Sacaen, named Uhai, immediately joined the Black Fang. His skills as a mounted archer proved invaluable to the group, and his ideals mirrored Brendan’s.

A few months later, Brendan’s three adopted children, Jerme, Legault and Aesha, felt ready to fight. Brendan reluctantly allowed them to join the band, but was adamant about keeping his biological children, Linus and Lloyd, out of it, for despite their skill the Commander was afraid he would lose them. They encountered Pascal shortly after, who upon seeing that the group was serious and committed to their cause, decided to take up the Commander’s offer and joined the group. Uhai, realizing the group was becoming too large for the identities of its members to remain a secret, suggested they select appellations to be referred to in public. Brendan agreed and assigned new names to his soldiers. The King’s spies, however, found them before they established these names and reported them to their liege, who in turn exiled them from Kingsborough and stripped Pascal of his title. Out of ‘mercy’, he allowed him to retain his position as Count of Landskron. Pascal then housed the Black Fang in his palace, and supplied them while he could, but some of his fellow nobles, scared for their lives as they knew they regularly abused their power, swayed the King to label the group as a terrorist organization, driving them into hiding.

In 965, realizing the Fang’s coffers would empty before long, Brendan decided that the Black Fang should become a full-fledged mercenary band rather than vigilantes who operated in the shadows. Soon after the announcement was made, a sorcerer named Nergal contracted them to eliminate one of his enemies. Brendan accepted, but when they reached the village where their target, Juge, lived, the sorcerer ordered the mercenaries to burn down the whole village and leave no survivors. No-one in the group acquiesced, so Nergal took matters into his own hands and unleashed an army of morphs upon the village, slaughtering everyone. In an attempt to stop the violence, Laurel attacked the sorcerer, who was not remotely injured, and was killed when he retaliated. The only villagers who survived was the target’s daughter Nino, who was but an infant, and Jaffar, a homeless boy who was not too different from Legault when Brendan first found him. Nergal took the boy discreetly so Brendan and his soldiers would not notice, but Nino was conspicuously taken by Sonia, Nergal’s assistant, who began to raise her as a daughter. Jan noticed the girl had dropped a locket before Sonia warped away, so he took it, promising himself that he would one day return it to her.

Over the next fifteen years, the Black Fang would grow into a major organization, and was eventually corrupted by Nergal and Sonia when they sought to use them to further the sorcerer’s own aims – the very aims Juge sought to prevent. In 979, when Brendan married Sonia, Jan was reintroduced to Nino, who naturally did not remember him or anything else before she was taken from her family. Sonia, however, remembered Jan well and ordered him to keep silent. At first, Jan acquiesced, fearing for his life as Sonia was exponentially more powerful than he had ever been, but eventually he could contain himself no longer and in early 981 told Nino the truth of her past and gave her the locket she dropped as an infant. With the assistance of Legault, Jan fled to Pherae where he settled down. He lived there in peace until he was killed in a massacre shortly before the start of the next age.

Pascal “Crazed Beast” Landskron (940 A.S. – 981 A.S.)

Pascal Grentzer Landskron was the Palatine of Kingsborough and cousin of Duke Pheidon Alexandria. His father, Count Landskron, was the Duke’s most trusted adviser, and his mother – who died at childbirth – was the Countess of Grentzer. Both Grentzer and Landskron were located in Alexandria and were among the most prominent counties in the Dukedom, if not the entire country.

The family’s closeness to Lord Pheidon led them to obtain the greatest benefits. The Count’s wealth eventually corrupted him and he lost interest in his people. When Pascal tried making amends, giving to the poor within his county and using his personal funds to create healthcare and other support programs, his father disowned him and exiled him from the county. When King Louis heard of this, he had Count Landskron executed, replaced him with one of the Royal aides, and sought out Pascal. Upon finding him, he adopted him and raised him alongside his biological son, Desmond. Pascal came to love his adopted family, and his kindness and skill earned him the respect of the nobility.

In 958 A.S., Desmond ascended to the throne. His first act as King was creating the title of Palatine. He did so specifically for Pascal so he would have great influence, which he felt he deserved. While in the Bernese Hierarchy, the rank of Palatine became the equivalent of Archduke in Etruria, the two held very different tasks – The Archduke of Etruria manages all the dukedoms in the country and serves as an intermediary between the Dukes and the Royal Family, while the Palatines of Kingsborough and Queensborough in Bern manage their respective lands as if they were their Dukes, but in the event of an emergency could take the place of the King and Queen, respectively.

Pascal did very little work, however, as Desmond desired to personally oversee the lands traditionally granted to him to rule directly. As a result, the Palatine often slipped out of the castle to take care of bandits that might have been roaming. One night, he came across Lord Brendan, son of the disgraced Duke Reed, his wife Laurel and their friend Jan, who were out performing the same task. They became fast friends and eventually Pascal joined their little band of vigilantes which eventually became the mercenary organization known as the Black Fang. Desmond eventually found out, and as a result stripped him of his position as Palatine and restored him to the position of Count Landskron. Pascal accepted this and managed to make the best of it, doing for his county what he was doing before his father disowned him.

Things changed for Pascal after the Black Fang’s first official mission; the events of which left him eternally scarred. From the atrocities he witnessed, he gained a new mindset – rather than to be kind to his people, he wanted nothing more than to kill. One day, in 977A.S., he got bored of killing corrupt noblemen and single-handedly massacred an entire village, claiming they were full of ‘atheist heathens’ and he was doing the Church a favor. Neither Desmond nor Brendan accepted the excuse, and both cast him from their respective circles, resulting in his imprisonment until early 981A.S., when Sonia, the second wife of Brendan Reed, bailed him out and used him in an attempt to eliminate Lords Eliwood Pherae and Hector Ostia. The attempt ultimately failed and Pascal was killed.

Despite all he worked for in his early years, Pascal would only be remembered for the atrocities he committed after the trauma he endured in his first mission.

Brendan Reed (919 A.S. – 981 A.S.)

Brendan was the son of Duke Martin Reed. Reed was the largest Dukedom in Bern until 935 A.S., when King Louis dissolved it for corruption. The land remained lawless until 977 A.S., when King Desmond, Louis’ son and successor, abdicated the land to one of his chief advisers, Lord Yosef, who renamed it Thracia.

Stripped of his family and his lands, Brendan went into hiding. A prodigy of axemanship, the very thought of crossing him struck fear into the hearts of the Bernese soldiers, causing them to leave him alone unless ordered otherwise. The former nobleman caused no trouble, so no such orders were given. In fact, the only sightings of him by anyone – nobles, peasants and soldiers alike – was when he went to villages to stop bandit raids. The shopkeepers repaid his kindness by feeding him, restocking his vulnerary supply and giving him new weapons if he needed them.

On his twenty-first birthday, Brendan decided to treat himself to a casual stroll through the typically peaceful Devlinshire Wolds. To his annoyance, he came across a merchant caravan being accosted by a group of particularly vicious bandits, who he recognized as members of the Taliver Clan – mountain-dwelling marauders from Sacae. The caravan had a group of mercenaries protecting them, but the brigands outnumbered them nearly three-to-one. Despite that advantage, this particular bunch seemed rather exhausted, leading the axeman to believe they were driven out of their lands by mighty Djute warriors. Due to the bandits’ fatigued state, the mercenaries managed to hold their own, but Brendan knew it was only a matter of time before they were overwhelmed. The axeman did not even hesitate to lend his aid, turning the tide of the battle and saving the caravan. His skill impressed the mercenary leader, a middle-aged swordsman named Walker, who offered him a place in his ranks. Tired of traveling on his own, Brendan accepted and soon became a valued member of the band, even earning the heart of Walker’s finicky niece, a sniper named Laurel; the two were married within a year.

For the next ten years, Walker’s company was kept very occupied, as their services were constantly sought out by merchants who wanted (and could afford) the best protection possible. Everything began to change, however, when Walker received word that his son, Dieck, had been forced into pit-fighting. The mercenary retired soon after, leaving for Etruria to try and buy his freedom. Unfortunately he was killed by bandits while traversing the mountains that separated Etruria from Lycia. After learning that he was killed, the mercenaries appointed Brendan as their new leader, and for the next few years he tried his hardest to keep the group going. The former nobleman was not nearly as savvy as his predecessor, and the group began to find fewer and fewer jobs as time went on.

By 958 A.S., the mercenaries found themselves barely getting fifteen jobs per year, albeit high-paying ones. Brendan and Laurel’s sons, Linus and Lloyd, were old enough to fight with alongside their parents, who reluctantly decided to let them. They inherited their parents’ skills at combat (though they specialized in swordsmanship), earning a great deal of renown and getting more merchants interested in employing their services. Still, business was rather slow, and the mercenaries found it difficult to maintain themselves. Shortly before the new year, however, their luck began to change. A nobleman from the Dukedom of Fafnir requested that they guard a caravan transporting pre-Scouring treasures to Kingsborough. In return for their services, the noble promised them fifty thousand gold and free room and board for the rest of their lives. Brendan thought this too good to be true, but despite his reservations he chose to accept. Unfortunately his hunch would be proven correct, as this was merely a ploy to turn the newly-crowned King Desmond against mercenaries; his support of them made many of the others fear this would be a repeat of the Etrurian Civil War a few centuries ago, in which the King’s reliance on mercenaries became his undoing when they turned against him, leaving only the Royal Mage Corps and the small, inexperienced and undertrained Royal Army to defend him.

When the mercenaries reached the border of Fafnir and Kingsborough, they were assaulted by Duke Fafnir’s personal guard – disguised as bandits – and were soon overwhelmed by their numbers and skill. Only Brendan, Laurel, Linus, Lloyd and a handful of the other mercenaries survived. They ran for the nearest village to report this incident, only to find it burned to the ground, with the bodies of their fallen companions – and several Bernese soldiers – scattered across the grounds. A squadron of Royal Wyvern Knights flew in shortly after Brendan and his company arrived; after seeing the carnage, they blamed the mercenaries, who fled. Rather than pursuing them, however, the Wyvern Knights flew to Bern Keep to report what they found.

Brendan later learned that many other mercenary companies had experienced the same thing. Greatly concerned about their futures, he ordered his men to disband. The mercenaries reluctantly complied, assumed new identities and started new lives. The axeman took his family north to Devlinshire – where Bern had no jurisdiction – and purchased a home in a small settlement. To maintain their levels of skill and a steady income, the Reed family joined the local militia and helped defend the village against bandit raids. Their talent did not go unappreciated, and soon the mayor exempted them from all taxes. Unfortunately their happiness did not last long.

Noblemen from Bern, in an attempt to stop the influx of bandits from the Sacaen mountains, sent their best soldiers to raid the border. On their way, they crossed through Devlinshire and destroyed most of the villages in their path, including Brendan’s. This action was the last straw for him; he took his family south to Kingsborough, where he hoped to one day get revenge on all the nobles who had wronged him over the years. He purchased a small house for his family, but he himself left to further his skills. Laurel sometimes went with him, but she forbade her children from ever joining them. One day, a group of bandits tried to raid an armory, but were almost singlehandedly defeated by the armorer, a Sacaen-born fighter named Jan. Those few who he could not handle were stopped by Brendan, who had intervened when he heard the commotion. Seeing how skilled the armorer was, the former nobleman requested that he join his cause. Apparently Jan had his own quarrels with the nobility; he gladly accepted Brendan’s request. Reed soon introduced the armorer to his family, and they became very close. So close, in fact, that Jan risked his reputation to call in what favors he had so he could find people who might be willing to join Brendan’s cause. His connections told him of two people who may have been willing: Palatine Pascal Landskron and a Sacaen nomad named Uhai, who had traveled to Bern around the same time Jan had. Meanwhile Laurel had found and adopted three street kids who showed a great deal of potential, Jerme, Legault and Aesha.

Feeling confident that they were prepared to start an organized group, Brendan took Laurel, Jan and his three adopted kids to seek out Pascal and Uhai and bring them into the fold. First, as a warm-up, they went to hunt bandits. Coincidentally, the Palatine was doing the same thing. Brendan approached Pascal and asked him to join his new group – which he and his companions elected to name the Black Fang – but the paladin refused, afraid associating with mercenaries might result in his execution, undermining everything he had been working toward. He added, however, that he supported the former nobleman’s actions, and wished him the best of luck. Brendan understood his reservations and left to pursue Uhai. The Sacaen warrior proved easy to find, as his Sacaen garb was most conspicuous in a sea of Bernese civilians wearing normal attire. Uhai was much easier to persuade than Pascal, as he had an instinctive hatred of nobles, believing them to be extremely discriminatory. Brendan was somewhat offended by this, having once been a nobleman himself, but understood why the Sacaen felt the way he did.

Pascal later had a change of heart, figuring doing the right thing was more important than having a good reputation, and sought out Brendan. When the Palatine found them, the axeman was more than happy to welcome him into the Fang. He, along with Linus and Lloyd, helped train Jerme, Legault and Aesha, and after a few months the three adopted children felt ready for combat. Realizing that the group was now large enough to be noticed, Uhai suggested that the members take on new names. Brendan agreed, and assigned appellations to his friends and family. He became the Commander, Laurel became the Brown Eagle, Linus the Mad Dog, Lloyd the White Wolf, Jan the Wild Bull, Uhai the Soaring Hark, Pascal the Crazed Beast, Jerme the Death Kite, Legault the Hurricane, and Aesha the Storm Crow. Unfortunately the King’s spies found out about them beforehand, put bounties on their heads and labelled the Black Fang a terrorist organization. In addition, he stripped Pascal of his position as Palatine, though out of “mercy” allowed him to remain Count of his homeland, Landskron. Pascal took advantage of his position as Count and provided the Fang with a safe place to live.

Eventually, their coffers ran low, as solely fighting bandits and corrupt noblemen did not earn them a lot of gold, so Brendan decided they would accept work as mercenaries for merchants and other respectable fellows. One day a sorcerer named Nergal came along and offered them a large sum to kill one of his “corrupt” enemies. Brendan agreed without a second thought, and the sorcerer led them to the village where his enemy, a sage named Juge, resided. Seeing that they were actually a peaceful people, the Fang refused to cooperate. Nergal responded by using his own magically-created soldiers to burn the village to the ground, kill Laurel and capture two children orphaned by his attack. Brendan and his companions were horrified by what they saw; Pascal and Jerme were traumatized to the point that they went insane.

The Black Fang built a new hideout in the mountains between Queensborough and Fafnir, where they operated as a force that solely killed corrupt noblemen who abused villages, accepting in return only what the villagers could supply. For the next two decades they fulfilled their promises to the people, earning the love of the common folk and the hate of the nobility. Eventually, however, Nergal sought to use them to further his own ends, and had Sonia seduce Brendan. Brendan could not help but fall for her, much to his sons’ disapproval.

Sonia’s control over Brendan and his organization only increased over time. Her actions resulted in the corruption, and eventually the destruction of the organization. In 981A.S., she revealed her true intentions to the Commander and killed him.

In 982A.S., Legault and Jan, the only two remaining members of the original Black Fang, sought to restore the organization to what it once was, but were unsuccessful. Marquess Pherae knew the full story, and using his influence, he made sure the Black Fang was forgotten by time; otherwise they only would have been remembered as criminals.

The Starlight Tome

In FE:CSR, Starlight will be quite different than it was in the games. For one thing, it is a plot-related weapon that is used and/or mentioned in every tale.

In the Akaneia games, Starlight was (if I remember correctly) the only tome that could negate the effects of Imhullu (I think Falchion could do that as well, but I don’t remember). In my publication, it is the only weapon that is effective against Black Magic.

Now remember, in FE:CSR, Black Magic exists outside of the Magic triangle/Trinity of Magic (basically, they are the magic equivalent of bows). Unlike bows, however, most higher-level black tomes render the user impervious to all non-holy weapons, with a few tomes impervious to ALL weapons (including Imhullu and Ereshkigal, which I changed to be Black Magic tomes). The only trump card is Starlight, and only two characters can use it. In-game this would be incredibly unfair, but remember, FE:CSR is a FanFiction publication, not a video game. There are exceedingly few characters who are capable of using black magic, and even fewer who are adepts. In addition, black magic corrupts the soul of the user and drives him/her insane… unless the user is an Archsage or has Avram, Loptyr, Medeus or Grima Holy Blood. When they completely loose their sanity, they become puppets of the Devil and typically are sucked into hell, only resurfacing when called upon by a demon existing on the mortal plane and during the End Days, which I will expand upon in Tales 12, 13, 19 and 20. When I write Book 1 (the prequel to the current publication), which contains Tales 1 through 9Ax, I probably will reference the End Days, but by then I will have fully explained them.
